Questions Faith & Reason

Can Christianity and science coexist?

Some people believe faith and science are in conflict, while others see them as addressing different types of truth. The Bible teaches that God is the Creator of the universe, and scientific discovery often explores how creation functions.

Why people ask this question

Advances in science sometimes raise questions about creation, miracles, and the origin of life. Many assume that scientific explanations automatically disprove spiritual truth. Scripture presents God as the designer of the natural world and encourages observation of creation.

The Bible teaches that God created the natural world

Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Psalm 19:1 (KJV)

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Scripture encourages observation and understanding of creation

Romans 1:20 (KJV)

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Human knowledge has limits

Isaiah 55:8–9 (KJV)

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

1 Corinthians 3:19 (KJV)

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

Scripture warns against knowledge that rejects God

1 Timothy 6:20 (KJV)

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

Key word study (Strong’s Definitions)

Knowledge (Greek: γνῶσις)

Strong’s G1108 — gnōsis: Knowledge, understanding, recognition.

Create (Hebrew: בָּרָא)

Strong’s H1254 — bara: To create, shape, form by divine activity.

What this means

  • Christianity teaches that God created the universe that science studies.
  • Science often explains how natural processes function.
  • Scripture explains why creation exists and who designed it.
  • Conflict typically arises when either science or faith attempts to replace the other’s role.

Gospel connection

Colossians 1:16–17 (KJV)

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
