Questions Salvation

How does someone become a Christian step-by-step?

Many people want clarity about what it actually means to become a Christian. Scripture gives a clear pathway: hearing the truth about Jesus Christ, recognizing sin, repenting, believing the gospel, and trusting Christ personally. This is not a formula to earn salvation. It is a Biblical explanation of how a person responds to God's call.

Why people ask this question

Different churches and traditions sometimes describe conversion in different ways. Some emphasize rituals, some emphasize emotional experiences, and some emphasize moral improvement. The Bible emphasizes repentance toward God and faith toward Jesus Christ.

Step 1 — Hear the gospel

Romans 10:17 (KJV)

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (KJV)

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Step 2 — Recognize personal sin and need

Romans 3:23 (KJV)

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 6:23 (KJV)

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Step 3 — Repent and turn to God

Acts 3:19 (KJV)

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Acts 20:21 (KJV)

Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Step 4 — Believe on Jesus Christ and trust Him personally

Acts 16:30–31 (KJV)

And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Romans 10:9–10 (KJV)

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Step 5 — Receive new life (being born again)

John 3:3 (KJV)

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Step 6 — Follow Jesus as a disciple

Luke 9:23 (KJV)

And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

John 14:15 (KJV)

If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Ephesians 2:8–10 (KJV)
